Resumen
The aim of this research was to analyze the social representations about the role of men as violence victims from an interpretive perspective, in men belonging to the Santo Tomás University, Bogotá, Colombia. This research was developed through a mixed methodological approach, in whose main component narrative analysis was used and 6 men were interviewed, and in the supplementary component a descriptive transactional design through the application of a CAP poll was conducted to 63 men. Among the main qualitative results, it was found that the phenomenon of violence against men has made invisible due to the concealment built by social demands related to gender roles, machismo practices that ignore their psycho-affective needs, and the lack of recognition of situations that violate their human rights; while within the main quantitative results, some factors that limit the knowledge and approach to the phenomenon were found, which are closely related to the lack of disclosure of cases of violence, and the scant regulatory and institutional attention. Within the narratives of the interviewees, complex understandings of gender stereotypes and machismo, their advantages and disadvantages, and their practice in the daily life of men are identified; however, ways to justify and vindicate these phenomena, which perpetuate gender violence against men, were also identified.
