Resumen
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a public health problem that affects millions of people around the world; several studies have shown that a decreased muscle strength is associated with increased mortality and poorer quality of life in patients with CKD, therefore, the use of the handgrip strength test has been proposed as a simple, accurate and non-invasive method to assess muscle strength in these patients.
Objective: Argue how the use of the handgrip strength test is a key instrument for the prognosis in patients with chronic kidney disease under a documentary review.
Method: This review article turned out from 25 studies that investigated the relationship between the handgrip strength Test and patients with CKD by means of a relational matrix.
Results: The results indicated that CKD patients have decreased handgrip strength compared to healthy controls, also, a positive relationship was found between handgrip strength and kidney function in CKD patients, suggesting that kidney dysfunction may be associated with decreased muscle strength.
Conclusion: It was shown that the use of the handgrip strength test in patients with CKD is useful for identifying patients at risk of frailty and monitoring the progression of the disease.
