dc.description.abstract | Objective: To identify and understand, in the literature, the level of health literacy of family
caregivers of the elderly and the influence of this marker on aspects arising from daily care.
Method: This is an integrative literature review, which used SCIELO, LILACS as databases.
The search strategies were performed using DECS descriptors (Descriptors in Health
Sciences). The descriptors used were “Health Literacy” and “Family Caregiver” and
“Elderly”, combined with the Boolean operator AND. Results: From the searches, five
articles emerged (n=5) that made up the study. It was evidenced that only two articles (n = 2)
contemplated the objectives of the present study, investigating and comparing the literacy
levels of family/informal caregivers in everyday situations and coping with the care of the
other. The analysis of the studies made it possible to identify the difficulties in the search for
studies that address health literacy specifically in the context of the family/informal caregiver
of the elderly, however, the studies found in this research demonstrate that caregivers have a
higher level of literacy than the elderly, however, there is a lack of information to be able to
provide care properly. Conclusion: The resulting review contributed to the identification of a
small number of bibliographic material on the subject, with a predominance of theses and
dissertations consistent with aspects related to the condition of caring for others, and the
promotion of tools capable of achieving better health outcomes, which are strategies that
health professionals can use to build dialogues, interventions and optimize results. Studies
show that a high level of literacy helps in relation to occupational and functional performance
in the daily lives of caregivers, as it promotes greater levels of autonomy, search for training
and empowerment of subjects. | |
