In view of the various uses of wood and due to its characteristics prone to deterioration by fungi and insects, it is necessary to use chemical preservatives such as, for example, chromated copper arsenate, which is characterized by fungicide and insecticide action. This preservative, despite having satisfactory properties when used in the material, may have its components leached into the environment due to climatic conditions, which may cause contamination of water resources, soil and consequently the microorganisms present. As this product is composed of heavy metals, it can result in stress and even death of the soil microbiota. This work aimed to evaluate the basal and substrate-induced respiration of soils contaminated with chromated copper arsenate. For this purpose, samples of two soils were collected at previously determined points in the UFSM/FW experimental area, both with different characteristics. One of them comes from native forest, considered of high natural fertility, and the other from an ancient cultivation of fruit species, considered of low fertility. Based on this, basal respiration and substrate-induced respiration were determined. The biological characteristics evaluated were important when related to soil fertility in relation to the contaminant, in addition to presenting the behavior of microorganisms in relation to this preservative. In general, it was observed that contaminants can somehow cause stress to microorganisms, thus modifying sustainability and increasing energy production. Therefore, it was possible to conclude that the application of chromated copper arsenate in both soils studied causes a difference in the results only for basal respiration, where the high fertility soil stands out. It is possible to indicate the performance of new studies, to better evaluate the effects of higher dosages of the contaminant in order to observe its polluting potential in the soil.
