dc.description.abstract | This work analyze female incarceration and seeks to understand data recorded by national public security agencies. The objective is to know what causes the increase in the imprisonment of women, between the years 2000 to 2017. The methodology used was the exploratory study, where data on female imprisonment in Brazil and RS was studied. Data analysis served to expose the evolution of incarceration rates, mainly in the country. According to the data presented, the main cause of female incarceration is drug trafficking. The current Brazilian laws to combat drug trafficking, the main crime that most arrests women in Brazil, combined with public policies to prevent drug use, are ineffective – since it is not possible, in most cases, to arrest the big dealers who manage crime, or remove the basic production of drug trafficking from the streets. Furthermore, an inversion was observed in the predominant raciais classes in female prisons: while at the national level there is a predominance of self-declared black women, in RS there is a predominance of white women. The State, with its public policies aimed at social classes with greater social vulnerability, is unable to reach the most vulnerable female populations in time, which end up being used by drug traffickers as drug “mules” as women who carry small amounts of drugs. It is therefore necessary to reaffirm the state's role in providing social and economic security to the low-income female population, as well as to review the current anti-drug policy. | |
