dc.description.abstract | Hematuria is often detected in urinalysis routine, although it is asymptomatic in most
cases, not causing any alterations in urine in terms of color and aspect. Owing to this,
accurate diagnosis of microscopic hematuria is a challenge both for physicians and clinical
analysts. However observation of alterations in the size, shape and content of hemoglobin of
the erythrocytes during phase-contrast microscopic analysis has fostered the development of
urinary sediment routine in the as well as the diagnosis procedure for pathologies in the
urinary tract specially those of the glomerular type. In the 1980’s glomerular and nonglomerular
hematuria were initially identified through dysmorphic red cell count. Nowadays
such erythrocytes are preferably identified as acanthocytes or G1 cells. | |
