(2000, 2006, 2007), Marcuschi (1998, 2003), Apothéloz e Chanet (2003), Heine, Claudi e
artigos no português.
funcionamento desses itens no período arcaico e moderno do português.
The current work deals with the constitution and functioning of the definite and indefinite
articles in Old and Modern Portuguese, within a functionalist approach, by taking as corpora,
the Foro Real, by Afonso X, 13th century, the Flos Sanctorum, 14th century, and the Sermão
da Sexagésima, 17th century. The aim is to identify the constituent and functional uses and
aspects of the articles in the above-mentioned stages of Portuguese. The analysis of data is
based on processes of textual referentiation and phoricity in the path of functionalist authors
such as Castilho (1993, 2006, 2007), Neves (2000, 2006, 2007), Marcuschi (1998, 2003),
Apothéloz & Chanet (2003), Heine, Claudi & Hünnemeyer (1991), Koch (1990, 2004, 2005)
and Halliday & Hasan (1978). Taking into consideration the rhetoric-political and theological
nature of some texts composing the corpus, for better supporting the characterization of the
data, knowledge of aristotelic rhetoric was applied, mainly from the considerations of
Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005), with emphasis on the rhetoricist usages in religious
texts. It was attempted to verify methodologically if there is a grammaticalization process of
articles in Portuguese. With this purpose, a survey of forms of the articles in each text was
done, the semantic-functional value of the articles in the NPs was analyzed, and the use and
functioning of these items was compared in the medieval and modern stages of Portuguese.
The articles were classified according to the taken place and perfomed function in the
propositions of the studied texts. The results allow to propose that in Old and Modern
Portuguese, besides being already grammatizalized, the articles perform not only the wellknown
functions proclaimed by prescriptive grammar, but also the role of referrer and phoric
elements, with prominent endophoric potential.
