The gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) is a vegetable from the family of cucurbits, being one of the main unconventional vegetables in the state of Amapá, marketed in markets and fairs. Taking these aspects into account, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of different substrates on germination and vegetative development of the gherkin. The research was carried out at the Federal University of Amapá - Campus Mazagão, between November 2019 and January 2020. Two experiments were carried out, the first evaluated the index, percentage and speed of germination, testing the following treatments: T1: terra preta, T2: washed sand, T3: black earth + urea, T4: black earth + NPK (10:28:20) and T5: black earth + buffalo manure; germinating seeds are counted 12 and 15 days after planting to determine the germination percentage of the seeds, germination index, germination speed. The second experiment evaluated the vegetative growth, using the variables of length of the main branch and number of leaves emitted, according to the following treatments T1: black earth, T2: black earth + urea and T3: black earth + buffalo manure, evaluated at 15 , 22, 29, 36, 43, 50 and 57 days after germination. The treatments with black soil and black soil + buffalo manure provided a higher rate, speed and percentage of germination. The largest number of leaves emitted was obtained from the plant grown with black soil + buffalo manure. Regarding the length of the main branch, the treatments terra preta and terra preta + urea allowed a greater development. It is concluded that the use of black earth and black earth + buffalo manure is the most recommended for the initial growth of the gherkin
