RESUMEN: la obra del pensador colombiano Miguel Antonio Caro (1843-1909) constituye uno de los referentes de las letras hispanoamericanas más fecundas y quizás de las más polémicas por sus contenidos de orden histórico, político, social y cultural. A través de este artículo se establecen los mutuos nexos que el patricio conservador – Miguel Antonio Caro - configuró con España a partir de lo que él comprendió como la defensa de la identidad, la cultura y la idiosincrasia de los pueblos hispanoamericanos. Se destacan la manera como Caro contrarresta la ideología liberal decimonónica y polemiza con quienes la representaban en su momento en Colombia pues los “Radicales liberales” como se les conoció en sus reformas políticas, buscaban desprestigiar el legado y la herencia españolas a partir de la introducción de ideologías que como las del utilitarismo Inglés suponían un proceso de avance y de progreso hacia la modernidad. Caro busca restaurar la herencia española y preservarla frente a los azotes que le propinaba el liberalismo debatiendo la importancia que para nuestro continente tuvo la Conquista y la Colonización, las Revoluciones de independencia y sus héroes, la conformación de las constituciones y los elementos jurídicos, la cultura con lo que ella implica, la lengua, la religión y la raza. El artículo muestra la pertinencia que tienen los estudios históricos y sociológicos relacionados con las recíprocas relaciones intelectuales y culturales entre España e Hispanoamérica en el siglo XIX.ABSTRACT: the work of Colombian thinker Miguel Antonio Caro (1843-1909) constitutes one of the most outstanding and polemical examples of Latin American literature, especially regarding its historical, political, social and cultural content. This paper explores the two-way links established with Spain by the conservative patrician –Miguel Antonio Caro– on the basis of his understanding of the identity, culture and uniqueness of the different Latin American peoples. Special emphasis is put on the way Caro struggled against nineteenth-century liberal ideology and his acrimonious debates with those who, in Colombia, embraced it at the time, for the “Radical Liberals”, as they were then known, sought to undermine the Hispanic heritage and legacy defended by the conservative thinker with the introduction of contending ideologies, such as English utilitarianism, aiming at modernizing nineteenthcentury Colombian society. Caro sought to restore and protect the Hispanic heritage from the attacks mounted against it by the liberals, while emphasizing the continental-historical importance of the Spanish conquest and subsequent colonization, the wars of independence and their heroes, the writing of several national constitutions and legal traditions, the culture and everything that it implies, the language, the race and religion. The paper demonstrates the present and future relevance of historical and sociological studies centered on the intellectual and cultural relations that connected Spain and Latin America throughout the nineteenth century.COL0064075
