Second of three books proposed within the Colombia Científica-Alianza efi project in its Macroeconomic component, this study contains empirical results obtained with method ological and instrumental rigor. The estimates in each of its chapters shed important light on the relationship between fertility and a woman’s probability of being formally employed, as well as the relationship between initial conditions in formality and the probability of remaining or transitioning to formality in an intergenerational context. The results are also of interest in terms of labor policy application, and the empirical evidence shows a direct relationship between the reduction of informality and the reduction of social secu rity contribution rates. From a more macro perspective, these empirical studies present evidence of the relationship between macroeconomic variables, international trade, and informality. In short, readers of these lines receive a set of research works that allow for a better understanding of the phenomenon of labor informality. A thorough analysis should enable policymakers, public and private decision-makers, academia, and civil society, in general, to redirect their actions to reduce informality and move towards better living conditions for workers and their households
