This dissertation explores the occurrence and effects of the 2015 mudslides in the territorial struggles of the Pai Ote Colla community in the highlands of the Atacama region of Chile. The study proposes political ontology as a framework to address the political ecology of extreme weather events occurring in the context of indigenous struggle. Following an exploratory case study design and guided by this framework, the study examines the mudslides at the intersection of three dynamics: intense climate change effects, expansive mining development, and the encounter between extractivist mining and the Colla community. The findings describe a relational ontology from which climate change and the mudslides are experienced and enacted by the Pai Ote and how this conflicts with the naturalistic ontology of mining extractivism in their territory. In the encounter between these ontologies a particular political ecology is emphasized, where there is an ontological disagreement about what land, climate and its changes are; where the degradation of land produced by the mines amplifies the risk to Climate change; and where the agency of mudslides over the territorial struggle is evidenced through their effects on the Pai Ote demands and their relationship with the rest of the society.
