This thesis presents the design and construction of STARFISH 1, a prototype compact, low impedance, high-current pulsed power generator. The approach under-taken is based on the use of multiple very low impedance distributed pulse forming lines or networks that are conneted in parallel, DC charged and switched simultaneously into the load. This generator avoids the use of large, very high voltabe Marx capacitor banks and water pulse forming lines that are traditionally used. The lines or networks are constructed using either specially shaped tiles or by using conventional high voltage ceramic "door knob" capacitors. Both alternatives rely on the use of barium/strontium titanate technology. This material has a high delectric constant (er - 4,000), allowing a comapct design, high energy density storage and very low impedances (< 1 Ω). STARFISH 1 has four such networks or "limbs" connected in parallel giving a total impedance of Zgen - 0.3 Ω and storing - 350 J of electrical energy when charged up to its working of 40 kV. It delivers a square pulse into a matched load with peak current of 1peak - 70 kA and has a rise time of tr < 40 ns and a pulse width of tp - 250 ns. Each limb has dimensions of 150x50x50 cm allowing the generator to be easily accommodated in a Univesity laboratory and readily expanded by the addition of limbs. Such a generator is intended for advanced z-pinch experiments.
