Impatiens balsamina belonging to the balsaminaceae family is an annual plant that is very sensitive to changes in temperature, for which it requires a humid environment and has little tolerance to drought conditions. It can reach up to 60 cm in height in nature, they have very colorful flowers. It has a particular way of spreading its seeds since when touching the ripe seed pods, they explode, spreading them several meters which favors their distribution. It is native to eastern and tropical Asia; however, it is currently distributed in various tropical or subtropical areas because they do not grow well in very cold climates. In addition, over the years it has been used in Asia as a medicinal plant to treat a variety of conditions such as joint inflammation, infections, relieve headaches, among others, thus attributing therapeutic properties such as diuretic, emetic, fungicide, and bactericide. This is how it has been of great scientific interest, which is why a variety of studies have been carried out on its different parts such as stems, roots, seeds, flowers and leaves that demonstrate the presence of various metabolites.
Through the preliminary phytochemical screening performed on the hydroalcoholic extracts at 50% and 90% of the leaves and flowers of Impatiens balsamina, it was possible to determine the presence of certain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, quinones and catechins. The quantification of polyphenols by Folin-Ciocalteu in the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves at 50% and 90% was 2.22 mg EAG/g and 2.70 mg EAG/g respectively. Regarding the quantification of polyphenols by Folin-Ciocalteu in the hydroalcoholic extract of the flowers at 50% and 90%, it was 5.95 mg EAG/g, and
7.03 mg EAG/g respectively.
The evaluation of the antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extract at 50% and 90% of the Impatiens balsamina leaves was 55.0241 % y 60.387 %, respectively, and the antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extract at 50% and
90% of the flowers. of Impatiens balsamina was 73.1402 % y 82.2012 % respectively. Which indicates that both the leaves and the flowers have an appreciable power to inhibit free radicals and therefore it is a good prospect as an antioxidant.
