Las personas adultas mayores además de afrontar los problemas de salud propios de la edad, afrontan un entorno familiar marcado en muchas veces por la falta de unión y apoyo. El sentido de utilidad del adulto mayor se expresa cuando ellos puedan apoyar en el cuidado del hogar, reciben una pensión y realicen pequeñas labores. El objetivo del presente manuscrito es analizar la bibliografía relacionada con la intervención de los trabajadores sociales en aras de fomentar una vida digna en los adultos mayores. De esta manera, la responsabilidad y competencia de los trabajadores sociales en todo el mundo es enriquecer y hacer realidad los principios y valores reflejados en la sociedad, brindando una ayuda técnica y organizada ejercida sobre las personas, grupos y comunidades. Tal es el caso que los adultos mayores en ocasiones sufren situaciones de abandono familiar y son encerrados en lugares donde son tratados de una manera inadecuada,  es  por esta razón que uno de los pilares fundamentales en la intervención es la familia, como un medio para el cuidado y defensa de la persona adulto mayor, ya que para él su familia es un punto de referencia sumamente importante.
