Despite world transformations in the last 30 years, and the economic and humanitarian crisis in North Korea, the political regime has prevailed and is not seemingly about to end. This article discusses two underlying factors that provide stability for survival: on the one hand, it maintains a centrally planned economy, but under an informal arrangement that tolerates black markets and some levels of corruption; on the other hand, the nuclear program contributes to maintain certain domestic cohesion between the Workers Party and the military sector, but also legitimates the regime’s continuity against real or fabricated external threats. It concludes that power foundations of Pyongyang’s rule remain in place, so it’s still possible that it will overcome present and future adversities, that Kim’s family keep some internal and external political leverage, and may remain in power indefinitely.A pesar de las transformaciones mundiales de los últimos 30 años y las crisis económicas y humanitarias en Corea del Norte, el régimen político ha subsistido y no parece estar próximo a su fin. Este artículo discute dos factores subyacentes que proporcionan estabilidad para su supervivencia: por un lado, se mantiene una economía centralmente planificada, pero bajo un arreglo informal que tolera un mercado negro y ciertos niveles de corrupción; por otro lado, el programa nuclear contribuye a mantener la cohesión interna del Partido de los Trabajadores con el sector militar y legitima la permanencia del régimen ante amenazas externas, sean reales o fabricadas. Se concluye que los fundamentos de poder del régimen de Pyongyang siguen en pie, por lo que cabe la posibilidad de que supere las adversidades presentes y futuras, que la familia Kim conserve cierto margen de maniobra en su política interna y externa y continúe al mando indefinidamente.
