No obstante, entre algunos eclesiásticos surgió un pensamiento contrario a la esclavitud y a la servidumbre del indio, pues las Leyes de Indias legitimaron su libertad, pero al negro se le vio como instrumento de producción, y por tanto, sin personalidad jurídica.Slavery was one of the principal institutions during the Spanish domination in America, recognized and justified by the State as well as by the Church. However, among certain ecclesiastical figures, a way of thinking opposing slavery and the servitude of Indians emerged. In fact, the Leyes de Indias legitimized the freedom of Indians, but Blacks were regarded as instruments for production and, therefore, not as legal entities.
