In this paper, the authors explore the suitability of the category of genocide to describe the mass slaughter that took place in Guatemala. The authors also reflect on the way in which counterinsurgent memory reacts in relation to this event and the memory of the survivors and of the victims’ relatives. The memory of the genocide becomes problematic because it is linked to penal law, just as the truth is related to historical judgment. The authors analyze one of the blind spots of memory, sexual violence, which is concealed by the victims themselves. Today, a sort of continuation of the past internal conflict exists in Guatemala in the struggle to keep memory alive and to combat oblivion.Este trabajo explora la pertinencia de la categoría de genocidio para calificar la matanza a gran escala acontecida en Guatemala; así también hace algunas consideraciones sobre la manera en que actúa la memoria contrainsurgente en relación con este hecho y la memoria de las víctimas y familiares. La memoria del genocidio se vuelve problemática porque se vincula a la justicia penal como la verdad lo está al juicio histórico. Se analiza uno de los puntos ciegos de la memoria constituido por la violencia sexual, la cual es ocultada por las propias víctimas. Actualmente existe en Guatemala una suerte de continuación del pasado conflicto interno en la batalla por la memoria y contra el olvido.
