| dc.description | In this essay, I try to explore, through the analysis of his poetic and narrative work, Malcolm Lowry’s trip to Mexico and his difficult and troubled stay in our country. Actually, it’s about a double trip: not only the one that occurs externally: his arrival to the Mexico City and his stay in Cuernavaca and Oaxaca mainly, but the one that simultaneously is developed inside himself: that trip to the hell of alcohol and the consequent loss of love that his whole life was about. He comes escaping the hell of a madhouse in New York, just to find the hell of a canteen in Mexico. Through the images of his poems and novels, he shows us a reality in which the cruelty and barbarism, the misery and desperation of the Mexican life of the 30s hold hands with the distressed phantoms of his alcoholic hallucinations. All that on the feet of a volcano which projects his shadow of old deity in the depths of a cliff, that hungry mouth of hell which will end up eating Geoffrey Firmin in Under the volcano. | |
| dc.description | A través del análisis de la obra poética y narrativa de Malcolm Lowry, se intenta explorar su viaje a México y la difícil y conflictiva estancia en este país. En realidad, se trata de un viaje doble: no sólo el que ocurre en la exterioridad; su llegada a la Ciudad de México y su estancia en Cuernavaca y Oaxaca principalmente, sino el que simultáneamente se desarrolla en su interioridad: ese viaje al infierno del alcohol y la consecuente pérdida del amor a lo largo de su vida. Viene huyendo del infierno de un manicomio en Nueva York, tan sólo para encontrar el infierno de una cantina en México. A través de las imágenes de sus poemas y novelas, nos muestra una realidad en la que la crueldad y la barbarie, la miseria y la desesperanza de la vida mexicana de los años treinta se dan la mano con los angustiantes fantasmas de sus alucinaciones etílicas. Todo ello a los pies de un volcán que proyecta su sombra de antigua deidad en las profundidades de una barranca, esa boca hambrienta del infierno que terminará devorando a Geoffrey Firmin en Bajo el volcán. | |
