Two-dimensional (2D) materials are a single or a few atoms tick and self-contained in plane. Atoms are held together with covalent bond, forming sheets of material. In this work, we present an optical technique, called Raman spectroscopy, which can identify and characterize different 2D materials, as well as distinguish unambiguously the number of layers and composition. The materials under study are graphene, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), tungsten disulfide (WS2), and tungsten diselenide (WSe2). The position, width, and intensity of the Raman bands reveals composition and structural information of the crystal.
