dc.description | "Various species from the Rhus Genus have been reported to have antifungal as well as antibacterial activities. Rhus muelleri Standl et Barkley is an endemic plant from Northeast Mexico which has not been studied yet by its biological properties. Therefore, the objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo R. muelleri microbicidal effect. R. muelleri leaves ethanolic extract at a concentration from 100 up to 6000 ppm, were evaluated in vitro against F. oxysporum. Extract concentration from 100 up to 2000 ppm were assessed in tomato plants infested by F. oxysporum, in a greenhouse. In order to study the antibacterial activity, concentrations from 125 up to 2000 ppm against six diverse bacteria were tested: Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC 13048), Proteus vulgaris(ATCC 49132), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Proteus hauseri (ATCC 13315), Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 1002) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 12228). The chemical composition evaluation was performed by GC-MS. Results showed that R. muelleri inhibited in fact F. oxysporum in vitro and in vivo growth. Furthermore, the extract also had antibacterial activity against all bacteria tested. Eight bioactive compounds were identified. R.muelleri represents an alternative botanic antimicrobial. The present research has been the first study to publish data about the chemical composition and antimicrobial effect of R. muelleri."
