The changes in the education of organizational, epistemological, curricular, didactic and pedagogical character, propose for the teacher to intervene, participate consciously and critically in the integral formation of the students. Innovations challenge the modification of routines and traditional teaching, learning and evaluation models. To develop the research, it was proposed to analyze how the teacher, the educational practice and the curricular changes can work together to respond proactively to the complexity and challenges of contemporary education, through a documentary study. This led to recognition of the importance of professional updating, forecasting, execution of actions and motivating processes, generators of meaningful learning and construction of knowledge, accompanied by the renewal of curricular designs, in correspondence with the competencies for both teachers and students. A competent teacher, that is, a teacher of free citizens, with values, creative and prepared to exercise the risk of being forgers of their history, is historically recognized.      Los cambios en la educación de carácter organizacional, epistemológico, curricular, didáctico y pedagógico, plantean para el docente intervenir, participar consciente y críticamente en la formación integral de los estudiantes. Las innovaciones retan la modificación de rutinas y de modelos de enseñanza, aprendizaje y evaluación de carácter tradicional. Para desarrollar la investigación, se planteó: analizar cómo el docente, la práctica educativa y los cambios curriculares pueden trabajar juntos para responder proactivamente a la complejidad y retos de la educación contemporánea, mediante un estudio documental. Con el fin de reconocer la importancia de la actualización profesional, previsión, ejecución de acciones y procesos motivadores, generadores del aprendizaje significativo y construcción de saberes, acompañados de la renovación de los diseños curriculares, en correspondencia con las competencias tanto para los profesores como educandos. Un docente competente, es decir, formador de ciudadanos libres, con valores, creativos y preparados para ejercer el riesgo de ser forjadores de su historia, es epocalmente reconocido.
