This paper examines the different ways the figure of the chronicler is shaped by Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá in El entierro de Cortijo (1983). In this text, Rodríguez Juliá delves into the elusive concept of Puerto Rican identity, by exploring the different ways in which, as a collective subjectivity, Puerto Ricans experience death. In his exploration, the author constructs a chronicler who undertakes different roles that are linked with the different levels of the text. Through textual analysis of a representative extract, this paper identifies three levels of development: the geographical location and its inhabitants; the different forms of speech and orality, as well as the figure of the chronicler; and finally, the national biography. These three levels are linked to three different roles undertaken by the chronicler: he is an observer in the first case, a listener in the second one, and an interpreter in the third. The narrative discourse which frames the first and second levels is intertwined with the essayistic discourse of the third. This can be considered an attempt to forge a definition of the Puerto Rican identity, which is presented as complex, heterogeneous and fragmented.El presente artículo apunta a revisar los modos de representación de la figura del cronista en El entierro de Cortijo (1983), de Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. Este texto, integrado dentro de las generalidades de la nueva crónica latinoamericana, se configura como una de las áreas exploradas por Rodríguez Juliá con el fin de aprehender el elusivo concepto de identidad boricua. El eje del cronista se sitúa en este texto en los modos en los que esa subjetividad colectiva vive la muerte; para esta exploración, construye un yo cronístico que asume roles diversos, vinculados con ciertos planos de la densidad textual. Este artículo presenta el análisis textual de un fragmento representativo, que se despliega en tres planos: el del espacio geográfico y sus habitantes, el de las hablas, las formas de oralidad y la figura del cronista, y, finalmente, el de la biografía nacional. Estos tres planos se articulan con tres roles que asume el yo cronístico: es observador en el primer plano, oyente en el segundo e intérprete en el tercero. De este modo, el discurso narrativo que da cuenta de las dos primeras zonas de la densidad textual se entrelaza con el discurso ensayístico de la tercera, en una tentativa por abarcar una definición de la identidad puertorriqueña, heteróclita, compleja y fragmentaria.
