dc.descriptionThe wixaritari or huichols indigenous, established onto the Gran Nayar, maintained a good part of their customs and traditions despite the evangeliza­tion efforts driven since the colonial period. The documents of the franciscans who went to the region during mid-19th century, under custody at the Archi­vo Franciscano de Zapopan, show the huichol reluctance to abandon their culture not only through the hiding of their practices, but also with requests turned to the civil and ecclesiastic authorities in which they ask for respect to their customs. The resistance of the wixarika along with the hard nature of the Nayar region made the friars incapable to introduce catholicism as they would have wished.en-US
dc.descriptionLos indígenas wixaritari o huicholes, habitantes del Gran Nayar, mantuvieron buena parte de sus costumbres y tradiciones pese a los esfuerzos de evange­lización llevados a cabo desde el periodo colonial. La documentación de los franciscanos que acudieron a la región a mediados del siglo XIX, misma que se encuentra bajo resguardo en el Archivo Franciscano de Zapopan, mues­tra la renuencia de los huicholes a abandonar su cultura no sólo a través del ocultamiento de sus prácticas, sino también mediante solicitudes dirigidas a las autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas en las que piden respeto hacia sus cos­tumbres. La resistencia wixarika junto con la naturaleza escarpada del Nayar hicieron que los frailes fueran incapaces de introducir el catolicismo como lo hubiesen deseado.es-ES
