Resumen
300 (three hundred) years have passed since Leeuwenhoek described the existence
of the microorganisms and the knowledge about these organisms progressed
significantly. Pieces of information about: their morphological, genetical, and
molecular characteristics, causality relations with many diseases, and cultivation,
isolation, and preservation techniques have been widely explored by scientists. The
microbial world was recognized as relevant and established itself as a science.
Microbiological science reached uncountable achievements for humanity, and a
significant example are the vaccines that almost eradicated diseases that may be
fatal. All that knowledge and accomplishments are a result of the uncountable
researches, experiments, and practical works developed throughout the centuries by
thousands of scientists. In that context, it stands out the relevance of the practical
microbiology activities for the creation of new scientists and human resources. The
knowledge of morphological, biochemical, molecular, and other characteristics of the
microorganisms has a fundamental part in the formation of professions in diverse
health topics. Under such bias, it is impressive that the universities have a diversified
microbial collection and approximate the script of practical classes to the reality to be
faced by the students on the work market. Therefore, the development and
maintenance of a microbiological library is an indispensable resource in university
education. The FAMINAS BH microbiology laboratory does not have a biobank, and
this situation has been a limiting factor of the content approached in practical
classes, especially for the clinical microbiology, mycology, and virology subjects. The
creation of the biological library will contribute significantly to the instruction of
microbiology in all degrees and classes inserted in biology and health areas taught in
this college. Furthermore, a catalog containing images of the macroscopical and
microscopical characteristics of the colonies will be confectioned to improve and
facilitate the learning process.
