Resumen
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction and by the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and/or interests. In 1963, Ayres performed some of the first studies examining sensory problems in a wide range of developmental disorders. Through this work, she developed an intervention approach — Ayres' Sensory Integration (ISA) therapy — aimed at developing the sensorimotor foundations of academic skills and other higher-order skills (planning and organizing). This monograph intends to report the results of an occupational therapy program based on the sensory integration approach in a 5-year-old child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The intervention in the child took place during 2 years. The intervention was carried out in a therapeutic setting, twice a week in individual sessions of 40 minutes each. The child's mother informally authorized the writing of the case report. The intervention experience reported here allowed the production of some reflections, which make up the discussion that follows. The occupational therapy treatment with a sensory integration approach obtained favorable results in the evaluated aspects, demonstrating the increase in the child's ability to adapt and perform the sensory regulation of the stimuli offered.
