Resumen
Neck surgeries, including thyroidectomy, can present complications, such as those caused by damage to the nerves and other structures in that region. The thyroid tumors in dogs are uncommon, otherwise in cats that the thyroid tumors are common in elderly animals. While in cats these tumors often occur with hyperthyroidism, in dogs the most common symptoms are a result of the invasion or compression of adjacent structures, such as dysphagia and dyspnoea. The treatment includes surgical removal and adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Reported complications of thyroid surgery are hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism in cases of bilateral thyroidectomy, laryngeal paralysis in the case of injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerves and megaesophagus in case of bilateral lesion of the vagus nerve. The aim of this study is to report a case of thyroid tumor in a dog, which presented as post-surgical complications the development of megaesophagus and as histopathological diagnosis squamous cell carcinoma. This study also includes a review of the most relevant aspects related to this case.
