Resumen
We sought to address the issue of immigration from the perspective of its historicity (of the migratory event) and the dynamics of discursive studies in France and Brazil in order to observe how the historical, political and social context of the migratory event influence the treatment of immigration and the stigmatization of immigrants. In Brazil, although immigration is a strong historical component of the formation of Brazilian society, studies of immigration as a “problem” and associated with a “crisis” – as was the case in France – are recent and are related to events such as the flow of migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Bolivia and Syria. The social imaginary of immigration in Brazil until then was related to a historical and romanticized narrative of the lived and discursive experience of European immigrants who came to Brazil between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nowadays, a new narrative is outlined, motivated by the imaginary of the crisis and the migratory problem, of the dangerous and miserable invader that would threaten the stability of the “national”. The media’s ways of dealing with the issue have the potential to guide the political and social debate about immigration, silencing other possible perspectives of addressing the issue. They “see” the historical event in a certain way by framing it in its stigmatizing schematizations of the immigrant.
