In Medellin, the city imaginary is based on the objectives of the “Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial” (2014) aimed at consolidating a compact city model; the diffuse city is the one that generates insufficient public services, absence of public infrastructure, invasion of natural areas, loss of identity and social cohesion. For the problems resulting from unsustainable development, “Ecological urbanism is proposed as a strategy for adaptation and mitigation to climate change” (POT, 2014, p. 10), projecting the change of use of the Olaya Herrera Airport. The city model oriented towards Urban Sustainability takes into account indicators that seek to minimize the environmental, economic and social impact. Territorial intervention is proposed through strategies that seek to program a flexible system that allows proximity and mix of uses. The current
approach cone of the airport entails restrictions on high-rise urban development, and therefore, the change of use would mean
redefining the occupation of 254 ha (78,000 new homes), and 100 ha of complementary activities. Within the area, 8,400 new homes make up 1,000,000 m2 in private development (Residence - Mixed), + 600,000 m2 of effective public space together with total coverage of basic services: facilities, commerce, public space, mobility. The mix of uses together with 20 m2/Hab of public space in the urban project (Medellín goes from 3.4 m2/Hab to 4.2 m2/Hab), support the consolidation of the Metropolitan Park, a place to reconnect In Medellin, the city imaginary is based on the objectives of the “Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial” (2014) aimed at consolidating a compact city model; the diffuse city is the one that generates insufficient public services, absence of public infrastructure, invasion of natural areas, loss of identity and social cohesion.
