The document contains the research carried out at the María Inmaculada Educational Institution in the municipality of San Benito Abad - Sucre; Within the problem statement, the inadequate management of solid waste is described, the lack of environmental education caused by the lack of knowledge and the impact that the developed actions produce on the environment.
The objective was to implement a didactic unit to strengthen solid waste management as part of environmental education in eighth grade students, group one. A mixed approach was used, with a descriptive design; For the implementation, a didactic unit was created which allowed the improvement of the students' skills on the treatment of solid waste, through the empowerment of the teaching-learning process.
The results obtained showed a positive educational impact, with an increase in the academic performance of the students, as well as an increase in the motivation and interest of the students in the thematic contents, favoring their assimilation and the development of good practices. The analysis of the results obtained allowed validating the positive educational result of the pedagogical strategy, on which a didactic learning unit allowed to improve the skills and competences on solid waste management and environmental education in eighth grade students; This allowed us to conclude on the effective fulfillment of the objectives and of the didactic unit as an optimal tool in teaching-learning in the area of natural sciences.
