The aim of this study was to describe the speech characteristics of a sample of Spanish-speaking Parkinson´s disease (PD) patients treated with Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS). A follow-up study of PRE and POST treatment onset speech measures was carried out on nine idiopathic PD patients who underwent STN-DBS surgery (4 females and 5 males). The severity of dysarthria of every patient was assessed at the beginning and the end of the follow-up, acoustic measures of voice (fo, SDfo, intensity, Jitter, RAP, Shimmer, NHR, HNR, LTAS y CPPs), Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), measures of intelligibility of speech (grade of intelligibility and percentage of correctly identified words), speech rate, and oral diadochokinesia were calculated before surgery and every 3 months post-surgery during one year. Although statistical significative post-surgery group changes in any speech measure, or a recognizable pattern of speech change during follow-up were not found, an analysis of frequency of POST surgery and of sustained POST surgery changes revealed that STN-DBS influences speech in a different way depending on the speech measure, sex, medication status, pre-surgery level of dysarthria and stimulation parameters levels, all of which were found related with speech parameters variations in some way. Currently, all of the research in this field is from non-Spanish-speaking PD patients an all of the findings of this study warrant further research.
