The Marcgraviaceae, endemic to the Neotropics (distributed from the Caribbean
and southern Mexico to northern Bolivia and southeastern Brazil), comprise eight
genera and approximately 130-140 species. The center of diversity of the family
is northern South American. Species of this family are mostly found in primary
humid tropical lowland forests, montane rain forests, and cloud forests. They often
prefer higher altitudes. Norantea sensu lato shows considerable morphological
diversity in, for example, inflorescence structure and pollen morphology, and for
this reason, this genus has been divided into Marcgraviastrum, Norantea sensu
stricto, Pseudosarcopera, Sarcopera, and Schwartzia. A morphological-taxonomic
study of the genera Norantea, Pseudosarcopera, and Schwartzia is presented.
Aspects related to the classification, nomenclature, taxonomic history, generic
circumscription, generic affinities, and morphological variation of these genera are
discussed. Norantea has only one species, whereas Schwartzia is represented by
19 species, and Pseudosarcopera by two species. Keys to recognize the genera of
Marcgraviaceae and the species of Schwartzia and Pseudosarcopera, are given, as
well as descriptions of the species, synonymy, vernacular names, uses, geographical distribution, and morphological and ecological observations. A new species of Schwartzia for Colombia is described and illustrated, and the lectotypification for Norantea guianensis Aubl. var. gracilis Wittm. is presented. The most diverse countries regarding the number of Schwartzia species are Colombia with seven species (five endemics), followed by Brazil (four species, all endemics), Costa Rica (four species, three endemics), Ecuador (three species, one endemic), Peru (two species, one endemic), and Bolivia, Panama, Antilles, and Venezuela with
one species each. On the basis of few collections of the genera Schwartzia and
Pseudosarcopera, I suppose that numerous species of these genera are very rare,
caused principally by deforestation and fragmentation of the forests in recent
years. The species here examined are grouped in two categories: A. Species with
biogeographic rarity, and B. Species with demographic rarity. (texto tomado de la fuente) | |
