The model proposed maximizes the income from WEEE processing, the model was based on
stochastic linear programming due to the variability of some of the parameters: the expected
arrivals of WEEE in the following period, the amount of by-products obtained and the
processing time of each WEEE taking into account the processing method used. Thus, the
proposed model identifies the quantity of each WEEE that must be processed, choosing the
method by which it must be processed and the number of resources needed. The model is
multi-period due to the constant flow of new WEEE. The model is carried out with resource
variables such as the input stock and by-product stocks and the expected sale of by-products
in each period and the amount of demand that could not be reached. For the solution of the
model, the LINGO optimization software has been used. Likewise, the model proposes a
programming method based on priority rules, these rules were selected based on the level of
toxicity. In each period, first the WEEE that requires disassembly is processed, then those that
require a little processing, among these the product that contains the most toxic by-products
is selected.
The data of the model was recollected by the project Responsible and Sustainable E-waste
Management in Cuenca/Ecuador (ResCue). The model was validated by simulation, through
Flexsim software. All model information was entered into the Flexsim software. The results
obtained do not show different values for the variables analyzed, so the proposed model is
valid for planning and programming the treatment of WEEE.
