Resumen
The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between calcium intake and the
indicators of the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in adults. The study population presented from 3 to
5 diagnostic criteria for MetS. The research was carried out in Tena canton, Napo province at José
María Velasco Ibarra Hospital in the city of Tena. It has a cross-sectional, correlational analytical,
not experimental design. A sample of a hundred adult patients (both men and women) who
attended at the outpatient clinic of Nutrition and Dietetics Unit participated in this study. The
information registered in the files was provided by the patients and their medical records. When
correlating the daily calcium intake and the MetS indicators, a significant p value of less than 0.05
was obtained for triglycerides in male and female patients. While relating age with the same
indicators, a significant value of p less than 0.01 was determined for abdominal circumference,
systolic blood pressure and fasting glucose in both sexes. The relationship between daily calcium
intake and the presence or absence of MetS established a significant p value of less than 0.01
only for triglycerides. It is concluded that there is an inversely proportional relationship in the
presence of MetS between the daily calcium intake from animal and vegetable sources with the
five indicators of the pathology. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out an experimental study
related to this project which focuses on the metabolic changes of the patients when including food
from source of calcium in their diet.
