Introduction: Ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic epithelial neoplasm, comprising
approximately 1% of all cysts and tumors of the jaws and 11-59% of odontogenic tumors;
however, despite being benign, it is characterized by locally malignant behavior with a high
propensity for recurrence, local invasiveness, and the possibility of direct involvement of vital
structures. Objective: To describe the update on the diagnosis and treatment of
ameloblastoma. Methodology: Systematic review of documentary type, descriptive,
analytical and retrospective in its search, deductive method; from the keywords
"Ameloblastoma, benign tumor, odontogenic tumor", 150 scientific articles were used from
2016 to 2021, which were obtained on the web thanks to the search engines Google
Scholar, Scielo, RedALyC, and in the meta-search engines PubMed, Web of Science,
Cochrane, of which, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 57 articles were analyzed.
Results: Ameloblastoma is a benign tumor that presents different histologic variants, whose
diagnosis and treatment will depend on the type of ameloblastoma presented by the patient.
Aim: Thanks to the present bibliographic review it was possible to detail the clinical,
radiographic and histopathology characteristics of each type of ameloblastoma, according to
its current classification.
