This article analyzes the importance of the control of small arms and light weapons through the regulation established in various international instruments. Thus, the initial premise of this paper is that the absence of an adequate control of firearms negatively affects the respect for human rights and international humanitarian law. At the same time, the article explores two situations that have built awareness  about the suitability of the arms control system in Peru. From this, the need to link these concepts is generated through important instruments such as the Arms Trade Treaty. Finally, in light of the revised international instruments, we highlight what are the fundamental elements whose implementation would guarantee an adequate control of firearms in Peru.El presente artículo analiza la importancia del control de armas pequeñas y ligeras a través de la regulación establecida en diversos instrumentos internacionales. De este modo, la premisa inicial del presente trabajo es que la ausencia de un adecuado control de las armas de fuego impacta negativamente sobre el goce de los derechos humanos y el respeto del Derecho Internacional Humanitario. Paralelamente, se explora dos situaciones que en el Perú han alertado sobre la idoneidad del sistema de control de armas. A partir de ello, se genera la necesidad de vincular estos conceptos a través de importantes instrumentos como el Tratado sobre el Comercio de Armas.Finalmente, a la luz de los instrumentos internacionales revisados, destacamos cuáles son los elementos fundamentales cuya implementación garantizarían un adecuado control de las armas de fuego en el Perú.
