Resumen
The access to electricity from conventional generating units like big hydroelectric power plants is often restricted in islands and archipelagos due to the need for building substations and transmission lines in an area-restricted environment. Besides, support for these regions is limited and becomes a problem in case of blackouts. An option to minimize these limitations is the use of the renewable energy sources through hybrid power generation systems. This work proposes an economic analysis of a hybrid solar and wind power generation system for the island of Ilha do Mel, located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Possible scenarios combining wind turbines and solar modules with electricity from the grid are developed using the computational tool HOMER PRO. The model returns metrics such as project and operation costs, system optimization, complementarity between sources, which enable the comparison of the different scenarios. The results obtained by using the optimization tool in HOMER PRO indicate that a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system is the most economically feasible option, according to the performed simulations.
