Resumen
In the present work, the objective was to verify the preservation and quality of the water of Catu River, Catu district, Alagoinhas Municipality / BA; observing the conditions of the environmental preservation of the banks of the River Catu and checking if there are actions of the community in relation to the preservation of the river water. The sampling of the exploratory research was done with 32 residents of the Vila dos Laranjais Loteamento. An on-site survey was carried out to observe how environmental preservation was presented on the banks of the Catu River in the vicinity of the Catu and Marechal districts, and a socio-environmental questionnaire was applied to the residents in order to identify the level of knowledge about the importance from that ecosystem to the balance of the environment. The data analysis was performed in two stages: the first one consisted of the complete reading for transcription of the obtained data; the second was created tables through the program Microsoft Word 2013. Accordingto the data obtained in this study it can be concluded that, the pollution of the waters of the Catu river begins to occur in the city of Alagoinhas, it runs from the neighborhood, Catu and Marechal, arriving at the city of Catu. It was verified the presence of vegetation in its surroundings, but much affected by the urbanization process. In Pojuca, the Catu River already has a high pollution load, observed in the first instance by the strong coloring of the water. Regarding the application of the questionnaire, it was possible to verify the degree of education in the environmental area, and this was satisfactory, since most of the interviewees, 96.9%, understand the importance of treating effluents for environmental preservation. Most respondents, 43.7% say they know that the sewage is released into the river, but only 21.8% say that the river in particular is the Catu River. Thus, it is recommended an environmental education plan for the residents with the objective of sensitizing them to the environmentalcauses of the river. The elaboration of a permanent monitoring plan for the quality of the water of the Catu River is necessary together with the inspection by parts of the competent bodies, so that the current legislation can be fulfilled.
