Resumen
In chromatography, the resolution calculation is widely diffused and the numerical results generated are easily interpreted and associated with the separation degree of the peaks. This calculation can be performed with several equations described in the literature. However, almost always the equations used are idealized for symmetric peaks. In chromatographic analyzes generally the quantified peaks are quite symmetrical, but with the need to quantify impurities at extremely low levels, the peak of the major component is very large and asymmetrical. In these cases, since the major component is not quantified, sometimes the asymmetry of this peak is neglected. The problem is that by using the conventional equations of resolution between impurities and this asymmetric major peak, the results are generally unfaithful to the actual separation. Two proposed equations for symmetric and asymmetric peaks are proposed and show more reliable results for the resolution of asymmetric peaks. Chromatograms with more real resolution results with the formulas proposed are presented in relation to conventional formulas. The two proposed equations generate resolution values consistent with the separation of symmetric and asymmetric peaks, while conventional equations generate incoherent values for asymmetric peaks.
