Efficient equipment maintenance managemet remains one of the main challenges for organizations, which rely on selection of the most suitable tasks for failure rate control. Brazilian railway operation demand on adequate maintenance tasks increases as operational expansion is also expected. Locomotive diesel engines stand out for their role as main provider of the locomotive functions and, due to their high costs, their maintenance plays an important overall role. At such scenarios, the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology remains one of the most well-known and well-liked maintenance management options. It consists on an organized and structured process for selection of the best maintenance tasks which preserve the functions of systems under safety, environmental, economical and operational criteria. Therefore, this work focus on proposing a maintenance schedule emphasized for one subsystem, the power assembly, from one type of Diesel locomotive engine through execution of the seven steps of the RCM Methodology, combined with failure data analysis from a railway company. Preliminary results on failure data analysis confirm the recommendation for analysis on diesel engines and highlight subsystems more prone to deep evaluation and maintenance scheduling. Through analysis on manuals, procedures and dissertations from national and international railway companies, alongside with knowledge from local railway specialists, a maintenance plan adequate to operational conditions from the selected company was proposed. Failure finding inspections, most of them visual tasks, were recommended, to be done at a monthly interval, in agreement with the selected diesel engine characteristics, and in combination with other corrective maintenance tasks. The demonstration of calculation of optimal preventive replacement intervals under reliability analysis and maitenance costs evaluation was achieved for one component under one failure mode, whose results were in agreement with the company’s maintenance policies.
