Hydrogels constituted of chitosan and chondroitin sulfate were synthesized using ionic liquid as solvent and incorporation of propolis, aiming to determine their behavior in controlled drug release requirements and bactericidal properties. The samples were prepared by mixing 40% by weight of chitosan solution (12,5 g / L) and 60% by weight of chondroitin sulfate solution (75 g / L). Mixing was performed at room temperature and acid environment. After the synthesized material drying, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, bactericidal properties and chondroitin sulfate release analyses were performed. The results show that hydrogels were synthesized in all cases. The ionic liquid presence generates a better interaction between chitosan and chondroitin sulfate, besides helping, as well as propolis, in the organization of the chains. However, both components used together impairs the material crystallinity. The synthesized samples have good water absorption, being favored by the propolis presence, which also helps in improving the bactericidal character. The ionic liquid use in conjunction with propolis contributes to better drug release control.
