Resumen
The soil is an element of paramount importance in the civil engineering, acting as support for construction and raw material in landfills and containment structures. However, despite its great applicability, it is a heterogeneous, complex and unstable material, this fact can cause problems in the construction and lead to collapse. Thus, the present work consisted in the study of the mechanical improvement of a typical soil of the city Toledo - Paraná, by addition hydrated lime in proportions of 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%. For this purpose, a broad bibliographic review and laboratory tests of direct shear were made. The results showed that the addition of lime to the soil resulted in changes in physical parameters (void ratio and degree of saturation, analyzed here), in the compressibility and in the shear strength thereof. By means of graphical analysis it was possible to quantify the variation of the aforementioned parameters, verifying, at the end, the effective improvement of the soil when treated with lime. In particular, the proportion of 6% stands out from the others, with lower void ratio and degree of saturation and greater resistance to shear. Thus, said lime content was more indicated for mechanical improvement of this soil.
