Resumen
Biofuels production and use replacing fossil fuels is a strategy to mitigate climate changes by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There are many ways to produce biofuels each one leading to different environmental impacts. Biodiesel Production and Use Nacional Program (PNPB) is a program that encourage the production and use of biodiesel and petroleum diesel blending in Brazil. There is the need to replace diesel by a renewable fuel but that can increase GHG emissions due to land use change for feedstock production. The objective is to optimize the biodiesel blending in Brazil regarding climate changes. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Operational Research (OR) techniques are applied. The outcome is that from climate change point of view the best alternative is B100 provided palm oil cultivated in deforested areas of Legal Amazon is used as feedstock.
