Resumen
Currently there is a growing interest in industry for philosophy of lean manufacture, resulting in increased competitiveness by reducing costs and waste. However, there is a trend toward customization, as this adds value to the product, which causes a great diversification in the assembly line. In a synchronized assembly line with operations at a fast pace, it is crucial that the correct parts are being supplied at the right time and the right place. The work will address a case study in the automotive industry. In this research, the case study is an engine plant, where the need for cost reduction motivated the search for more efficient assembly means, which led to a “pilot" implementation of Kitting tool in the line. It was conducted a detailed study of Kitting tool in order to show: benefits and challenges of its application within the automotive industry, using the literature review and a case study; a list of Lean tools that help the kitting; a macro implementation model; and suggest further improvements. The Kitting tool, based on the Just in Time theory, has shown promise in providing a lean environment on the production line to avoid waste. However, also alerts to the need to make analysis as to the requirements and limitations of the tool to raise the feasibility of applying the kitting tool.
