Resumen
This graduation work was aimed at the graphic analysis of posters of the Festival Lollapalooza with headquarters in the USA, between the years 2004 and 2017. This analysis was based on the search for visual attributes proper to postmodernist graphic design as a way to understand the trends of graphic design from the beginning of the century XXI. Postmodernism was a set of cultural productions that began with the post-industrial society of the 1950s and was characterized by an eclectic and pluralistic setting in architecture, arts and design. In graphic design, it represented a reaction to the modernism of the Swiss International Style, whose adherents prized rationalism from the mid-1960s. The manifestations of postmodernism in graphic design are several, but this work focused on understanding the appropriation of styles of the past and vernacular forms, as well as in the deconstructionist layouts, since it was sought to make an association of these two manifestations with psychedelic posters (mid 1960s) and punk posters (from the 1970s) and grunge (1990s), which represent the approach of postmodernist design to music, especially rock. The posters of the Lollapalooza Festival in turn are part of a phenomenon of the contemporary graphic arts of growing the production of concert posters. In order to be able to identify the manifestations of postmodernist graphic design objectively on posters, an analysis roadmap was developed, based on a bibliographical survey on the theory and history of graphic design between the end of the 19th century XIX and beginning of the century XXI. The analysis also contemplated the trend called New Simplicity (from the 1990s) which concerns a reaction to the complexity of postmodernist graphic design in the digital age. The tendency of contemporary designers to use craft practices in their works was relevant in the analysis of the posters of the Lollapalooza Festival analyzed, especially with regard to the use of illustration.
