Cyanobacterial blooms represent one of the biggest issues related to environmental impact and public health due to the release of cyanotoxins after cell lysis. The most found cyanotoxins are microcystins produced by Microcystis aeruginosa, being microcystin-LR the most commom and toxic type. This study aims to evaluate the acute ecotoxicity of crude extracts (with and without ASM-1 medium) of Microcystis aeruginosa in Danio rerio fish specie. To quantify MC-LR the method used was HPLC-DAD and the concentrations found were: 81,66 µg∙L-1 in the extract with ASM- 1 medium and 20,60 µg∙L-1 in the extract without the ASM-1 medium. The fishes were exposed to the extracts by waterway for 48 hours (static system). After that, the blood and body samples (except the head) were collected and the ecotoxicological effects evaluated according to changes of biochemical and genetic biomarkers. The glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymatic activity in groups exposed to MC-LR was significantly lower when compared to the control group indicating an inhibition of the activity possibly related to the cyanotoxin in the crude extracts. Comparing the two exposed groups the decrease of activity was more pronounced in higher concentrations of MC-LR (81,66 µg∙L-1), in agreement with similar studies about inhibition of GST activity in high concentrations of MC-LR. For the glutathione reduced (GSH), the groups exposed to MC-LR in the crude extracts, did not show significant statistic difference comparing to the control group. In the comet assay, the scores obtained were compared among groups and between groups and control group and no significant difference was observed.
