Resumen
In order to deal with stricter pollutant emissions regulations and customers’ expectations the internal combustion engines demand constant technological innovations to make them more efficient. Between the engine’s sub-systems, the valvetrain is one that presents a big improvement potential. This work highlights the limitations of the conventional lobe-based valve operating systems, and presents solutions from some automakers to optimize the valve operation in their engines. Based in the initial research and using the Pahl and Beitz methodology was conceived, built and tested an actuator whose purpose is to operate combustion engine’s valves in a fully individual and variable way. According to the steps in chapter 7.1 performance targets were set and tests developed to validate them. After the fabrication of the actuator’s final version, described in detail in chapter 7.2, tests simulating situations of an operating engine were carried out. The testing results, written in chapter 7.6, were evaluated and the positive and negative characteristics investigated. The development has shown the obstacles for this system’s implementation and the needs for future work to turn the referred design into a technically and economically feasible product.
