Resumen
High-load resistance training is the usual method for developing strength and fat-free mass. Low-load resistance training with blood flow restriction (KAATSU) causes muscular adaptations such as traditional high-load training. The main objective of this study is to verify findings on literature about resistance training with blood flow restriction. Searches were made on the last 6 years on the main databases: BIREME, SciELO, PUBMED and LILACs and 14 studies were selected. All studies analyzed showed that this training method may provide similar gains on hypertrophy and strength as high-load exercises. Gains on cross sectional area were found (3%8%) and on muscle thickness (11%-16%). Significant gains on strength (6,7-33,4%) were also found. Different procedures, instrument and patterns were used, turning harder to compare some studies. The number of subjects is small and the length of training is short on most studies, suggesting that new studies are required in order to solve some unanswered questions and create an adequate guide-line. In conclusion, low-load resistance training is capable of inducing similar strength and hypertrophy as traditional high intensity training.
