Resumen
In this present study, we evaluated the effects of surface hardening process called boriding and reactive thermoreactive treatment of deposition and diffusion (TRD) in the main properties of steel drills AISI M2, as well as the potential use of samples subjected to such treatment as cutting tool. The samples were surface treatment of boriding and TRD, followed by quenching and tempering. After the treatments were carried out the mechanical characterization of layers of borides and carbides formed there in, through microscopic analysis (optical and electronic), microhardness. The layer borides and carbides were confirmed and identified with the diffraction X-ray technique. The microhardness has reached aproximately 2.900 HV. Finally, we investigated the potential use of the bodies of the test piece treated by boronizing and TRD as a cutting tool by drilling test in a steel AISI 1045. The results showed that the boriding and TRD were effective for obtaining a surface layer of high hardness and thickness, but the bodies of the test piece showed premature wear during the drilling test. Assigns to the result to high formation of cracks in the hardened layer, probably due to the quenching cooling immediately after boriding and TRD.
