The first section of the paper examines the attributes that makes police work a profession, comparing the english experience to that of Argentinian police. In the second section, the analysis of police professional journals in Argentina reflects on the disparate corporative views of the police agenda. Finally, the last section focuses on the problem of due obedience and accountability within the corcive apparatus of the state and summarize the implications embodied by the Janus-face character of police work: protection and repression.A primeira parte deste artigo examina os atributos que fazem da polícia uma profissão, comparando a experiência das polícias inglesa e argentina. Na segunda parte, a análise de revistas profissionais da polícia na Argentina reflete as diferentes visões da corporação sobre a atividade policial. Finalmente, a última parte se concentra sobre o problema da obediência devida versus responsabilidade dentro do aparelho coercitivo do Estado e resume as implicações do caráter de "face de Janus" da atividade policial: proteção e repressão.
