The present work presents the analysis of connectivity and spillover effect between the banking markets of 34 countries around the world, with a sample that includes developed and developing economies, from different geographical regions and different economic blocks. Stock indexes of companies in the banking sector were used in the period between May 2006 and April 2020, observing returns and volatilities. The technique used was the Spillover Index proposed by Diebold and Yilmaz, which is based on the decomposition of variance employing Auto-regressive Vectors. The results obtained demonstrate that there is connectivity between the banking markets of all the countries studied, varying in structure and intensity over time, with an increase in the general level of contagion in times of crisis. Blocks with a higher degree of connectivity are formed according to the geographic locations of the countries, with a more substantial spillover effect among the nearest ones. In the case of a major global crisis, as noted by the impact in the first quarter of 2020, countries that historically have the least exchange of spillover effects tend to be those that most add external influence to their banking sector, both for returns and volatilities. Countries with exchange history more active ones show less increase in the receipt of external influence in the face of international crises. The spillover increase that occurred in 2020 in the banking markets’ volatility, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, is the largest in the historical series observed, surpassing the peak of the second half of 2008.
